*Zoom and services that include the name Zoom are services provided by Zoom Video Communications, Inc.

From July 15, 2022, Zoom will have a 40-minute limit even for meetings with two participants if you have a free subscription. (Previously, it was only for meetings with 3 or more people.)
Companies and organizations using Zoom for business should consider switching to a paid license at this opportunity.

Zoom has a “screen sharing” function that allows you to display files displayed on your screen, such as slide shows and videos, on the screens of participants.

In addition to being able to share materials on the Web, this function is also useful in situations such as explaining operations, but since the screen is automatically displayed in full screen during screen sharing, other operations cannot be performed as it is.

Therefore, in this article, we will explain how to cancel full screen display during screen sharing on Zoom and other display modes.

We also introduce the types of video layouts that can be selected during a regular Zoom meeting, so please refer to them as well.

How to switch full screen display during Zoom screen sharing

How to switch full screen display during Zoom screen sharing

There are two types of “full screen display” during Zoom screen sharing: the size of the window frame itself, and the display mode within the window.

First, let’s take a closer look at an overview of what the screen sharing function is in the first place, and the procedure for setting and canceling full screen display.

What is Zoom’s screen sharing function?

Zoom’s screen sharing function allows you to display the screen or application displayed on your computer or smartphone on the other person’s screen.

There are three types of data items that can be shared: “Basic”, “Details”, and “Files“, and the following files can be shared. (PC version only)

basic Screen, whiteboard, iPhone/iPad, other running apps
detail PowerPoint (virtual background), part of the screen,
computer audio only, 2nd camera content
File Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, Box, Skype. However, very interesting alternatives have emerged to the well-known Microsoft SharePoint

When sharing any file, you can basically share it by the following operations.

  1. Launch the Zoom app and start the meeting
  2. Click “Screen Share” in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen
  3. Select the file you want to share from the list
  4. Click the “Share” button

Operation to set/cancel full screen display during screen sharing (window size)

When screen sharing is performed during a Zoom meeting, the participant‘s screen may automatically be displayed in full screen, and the shared file may fill the window frame of the computer.

It’s fine if you don’t have to worry about it, but it’s a little inconvenient if you want to operate another application while participating in a meeting.

If the window size during screen sharing becomes full screen display, it can be canceled by the following method.

  1. move the cursor to the top of the screen
  2. Click on the “Show Options” menu when it appears
  3. Click “Exit full screen”

This will cancel the full screen display and allow you to freely adjust the window size.

Switching between full screen display and horizontal display mode (display mode)

Full screen display in view mode means that the shared file is displayed entirely within the frame, regardless of the size of the window frame.

Since only shared files are displayed in full screen display, it is recommended to switch to “left and right display mode” if you want to talk while looking at the participants’ faces.

The procedure to cancel the full screen display and switch to the horizontal display mode is as follows.

  1. Click “Show options” displayed during screen sharing
  2. Click “Horizontal mode”
  3. Drag the separator left or right to adjust the division ratio

It is also possible to return to the full screen display by exiting the horizontal display mode and performing the above procedure again.

Types of video layouts that can be set in Zoom

Types of video layouts that can be set in Zoom

You can switch between different video layouts during screen sharing as well as during regular Zoom meetings.

Next, let’s take a closer look at the types of video layouts available in Zoom and how to use them.

Full screen display (full screen)

On the default Zoom meeting screen, the computer’s taskbar is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

To hide the taskbar and display Zoom in full screen, click “Start full screen display” at the top right of the screen.

To cancel full screen display, click “Exit full screen display” in the same way.

This operation can also be switched by double-clicking the screen.

active speaker

Active speaker is the default video layout for a mode that magnifies the speaker’s screen.

In a 1:1 meeting, your video is displayed on the top and the other party’s video on the bottom.

gallery view

You can view up to 49 participants at once in gallery view, and scroll to see the rest of the participants.

Click “Gallery View” at the top right of the screen to switch to the active speaker.

When you are in gallery view, the menu changes to the item “Speaker View”, so you can switch to the active speaker here.

mini window

Switching to a mini window is convenient if you want to operate another application while participating in a Zoom meeting.

Switching to the mini window can be handled with the minimize window function.

Click the minimize button in the upper right for Windows or in the upper left for Mac.

To exit mini-window mode, click “Exit Minimized Video” in the mini-window.

Hide participants without video

Participants who are using Zoom by video off or dialing in can be hidden in gallery view.

To hide non-video participants in gallery view, right-click on the participant you want to hide and click Hide non-video participants.

If you want to display it again, click “Show non-video participants” in the same way.

summary

  • When sharing data such as PowerPoint and PDF with Zoom, it may automatically switch to full screen display
  • Both Windows size and in-screen display modes can be canceled from full screen display.
  • Switch between different video layouts, including full screen and gallery view, even during a regular Zoom meeting

The appeal of Zoom is that you can change the display method according to the scene, such as full-screen display if you want to carefully check the material, or gallery view if you want to see the reactions of the participants along with the material.

Try using these different video layouts for more effective presentations and webinars.
