From July 15, 2022, Zoom will have a 40-minute limit even for meetings with two participants if you have a free subscription. (Previously, it was only for meetings with 3 or more people.)
Companies and organizations using Zoom for business should consider switching to a paid license at this opportunity.
If you are also a meeting manager or lecturer, you may want to ask someone else to operate Zoom.
Also, the host may be absent for some reason, or you may have to leave in the middle. In Zoom, the person who created the meeting becomes the host, but it is possible to transfer authority to another person later .
If you remember how to change the host according to the situation, you can respond flexibly in the event of a sudden schedule change or trouble.

A substitute host is someone who takes the place of the host in a Zoom meeting when the host is absent .
This is a paid license only feature , and the participants you can appoint are limited to users with paid licenses on the same organization account.
By assigning in advance, even if the host is absent on the day, the substitute host can exercise the authority of the host from the start of the meeting. Also, while the host is participating, the original host has all the authority, and when the host leaves, the authority is automatically transferred to the alternate host.
How to set an alternate host
- Open the meeting schedule creation screen in Zoom.
- Click Advanced Options.
- Enter the email address of the person you are appointing in the Alternate Host field.
- Click Save to save your meeting schedule.
The appointed user will be notified by email and given the role of alternate host simply by accessing the meeting that day.

Set up co-hosts for ancillary roles
Hosts have a wide range of roles, such as running a Zoom meeting and managing participants, and it can be a burden to do it all by yourself. Even if your host doesn’t leave and you’re not away, there are times when you want an assistant .
By setting up a “co-host“ , you can delegate authority to multiple participants in addition to the host.
To appoint a co-host, the host must be a paid account. Appointed participants can be free accounts.
What co-hosts can’t do
The co-host is not a substitute for the host when the host is absent, but an assistant when the host is present, so it does not take over all the host’s authority .
Please note that the following operations do not have permission for the co-host.
- Starting the waiting room (allowing entry from the waiting room)
- Subtitle start
- Start live streaming
- End meeting for all participants
- Appoint a co-host
Enable co-host
To use co-hosting, you must first enable the setting.
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal (https://zoom.us/).
- Click Settings.
- Turn on Co-host in Meetings.
If you can’t change the settings, it may be locked by a group or account.
Please check with your administrator.

Points to note when the host transfers authority on Zoom
There are some points to note when the Zoom host transfers authority, so please check them.
The host cannot leave without delegating authority to anyone
When the host leaves Zoom, they have the option to end the meeting for everyone or assign a new host.
If you want to continue the meeting after you leave, let’s transfer authority to the new host.
Up to 2 simultaneous hosts of multiple meetings
Users of Zoom’s paid plans (for business, enterprise, and educational institutions) can host up to two meetings at the same time .
However, you cannot host one meeting and one webinar, or multiple webinars at the same time.
Also, when hosting multiple meetings at the same time with Zoom, the meeting must be started by the original meeting host or the alternate host. Set an alternate host.
There is a time limit if the host has a free account
Zoom has a 40 minute time limit for meetings with 3 or more people hosted by users with free accounts .
If the original host is a free account, the time limit will not be reset even if the host transfers authority and another participant becomes the host.
Please note that even if the new host after the transfer of authority is a paid account, it will not be unlimited.
summary
- There are two ways to transfer authority in advance: using a host key or using an alternative host.
- You can select participants and transfer authority during or after a meeting
- The co-host function is convenient for assistants when the host is not absent
If the authority of the host can be transferred flexibly, it will be possible to conduct Zoom meetings more smoothly.
