Recording layouts in zoom

Depending on the video layout of your meeting, there are a number of different recording layouts for local and cloud recordings.

Video layouts of recordings always follow the layout of the host or participant that started the recording. A participant who has been granted permission to record may, for example, record while in the active speaker view, and if the host has granted permission to record, the recording layout will display in active speaker view.

Local or cloud recording layouts (desktop client)

It is possible to record these layouts either locally or via cloud recordings:

Active speaker

During the recording of a video, the video of the active speaker will only appear if you are in active speaker view.

Note: In cloud recordings, only the names of the participants can be displayed.

Gallery view

There’s a similar grid layout to the meeting client that displays participant’s video in the gallery view when you are in the gallery view. It is possible to display up to 25 participants at a time in the gallery view.

Note: in cloud recordings, only the names of the participants can be displayed.

Shared window

It is possible that when you share a window you won’t see any black bars to the right or left of the window in the recording if the window doesn’t take up the entire screen. You can use the thumbnail or gallery view to show the video of the active speaker while the window is shared and still see the participants’ video in the top-right corner.

Tip: If you want to record and share a window but don’t want the active speaker to overlay on top of that, you can use this recording layout.

Local recording layouts (desktop client)

Local recordings are the only recordings that are compatible with this recording layout:

Shared screen with thumbnail gallery view

Participants’ video will be displayed in the top-right corner of the screen if they share their screen. It will still appear in the recording at the top-right corner of the screen even if you move or decrease the thumbnail size.

Shared screen with large active speaker thumbnail

In the top-right corner of your local recording, you will also see a larger active speaker thumbnail in the top-left corner if you share your screen with the active speaker thumbnail and enlarge it. You will still be able to see the thumbnail of the speaker who is the active one in the recording if you drag it into another location during the meeting.

Notes:

  • The active speaker thumbnail in cloud recordings will only be displayed when the speaker is the active one in the recording.
  • The recording layout cannot be performed in the dual monitor mode, so the local recording will capture the standard thumbnail size for a speaker when the first monitor is activated.

Cloud recording layouts (desktop client)

Cloud recordings are the only ones that support these recording layouts:

Shared screen with active speaker

The recording will display the image of the active speaker in the top-right corner if you are sharing your screen with the active speaker thumbnail. The recording will still display the active speaker thumbnail if you move it to another location during the meeting, even if you move it to another location during the meeting.

Shared screen without active speaker or gallery view

The recording will only display the shared screen in the recording if you share your computer’s screen without showing the thumbnail of the active speaker or if you disable the option Record thumbnails while sharing in your cloud recording settings.

Note:  Zoom does not allow you to record the active speaker video, gallery view or shared screen separately, so if you chose to do that, when viewing the recording in the Zoom web portal, you will only see the active speaker video next to the shared screen recording.

Cloud recording layouts (mobile app)

There is only a limited number of recording layouts that are supported if you’re starting a cloud recording from the Zoom mobile app.

Note: Only cloud recording is supported by the Zoom mobile app.

Active speaker

During a recording, only the video of the speaker that is actively speaking will be displayed if you are in active speaker view.

Note:

  • Mobile apps do not work as expected when using the gallery recording layout for recording. You will still be able to see the video of the active speaker in the recording if you are in gallery view during the meeting.
  • Depending on the aspect ratio supported by the audio device and whether it is in portrait mode or landscape mode, you might see black bars to the right and left of the video if the active speaker is using a mobile device.

Shared screen with active speaker

You will be able to see the thumbnail of the active speaker in the top-right corner of the recording if you share your screen with the active speaker. You can also add annotations to the recording.

Shared screen without active speaker

The recording will only show the screen that is shared with the person you are sharing with, especially if you disable the option to record thumbnails while sharing your screen in your cloud recording settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Zoom accounts: Navigate to your account in Zoom to view or change recording layout settings. Click PERSONAL > Setting > Recordings.

Explanation
  1. Using the shared screen, record the gallery view.
  2. You should record each of the three views separately: the active speaker, the gallery view, and the shared screen.
  3. Create a file that contains only audio.
  4. Meeting / webinar chat messages can be saved.
The entire time is recorded on one screen. Video will be recorded in Speaker view if only the host shares video. There will be no recording for participants whose cameras are not turned on.

By default Zoom recordings capture the “active speaker,” so if your microphone is muted, it is most likely that your name wont show up on the recording if your microphone is muted. Alternatively, if you choose to stop your meeting, you can press the ALT + V key combination to press on your meeting screen, which will bring up the camera icon in the lower left corner.

Video and audio are automatically recorded by Zoom. If you have a plug-in microphone (if you have one), use that, and you’ll have the best audio quality.

There is a time limit of 40 minutes on your Basic plan. You can record your computer screen and voice with Zoom and share the video via a private web link or MP4 format.
