*Zoom and services that include the name Zoom are services provided by Zoom Video Communications, Inc.

From July 15, 2022, Zoom will have a 40-minute limit even for meetings with two participants if you have a free subscription. (Previously, it was only for meetings with 3 or more people.)
Companies and organizations using Zoom for business should consider switching to a paid license at this opportunity.

Zoom is known as a tool that allows you to hold online meetings with people in remote locations as long as you have the Internet. In addition to video and voice calls, it also has a chat function. Chat logs are also available, so many people are probably already using it.

However, some people may be having trouble saving Zoom chats as they wish.

Therefore, in this article, we will explain how to save Zoom chats that are often used for web meetings. We also explain the possible causes when the chat log is not available, so please help us.

How to save Zoom meeting chat

How to save Zoom meeting chat

Chats exchanged during a Zoom meeting can be saved in the following three ways.

  • Save manually
  • save automatically
  • Save to Zoom cloud

I will explain each method in turn.

How to save messages manually

To save manually, select “Chat” that appears at the bottom of the screen during a Zoom meeting. A chat window will open, click “Details” and choose to save the chat.

If you operate Zoom with this procedure, the chat data will be saved in the local recording location.

If you have not changed the default settings of Zoom, the following is the save destination, so let’s check it.

How to change the save location

To change the local storage location, follow the steps below to operate Zoom.

  1. Open Zoom’s “Settings” and select “Recording”
  2. Click the arrow next to “Save recording location” and select a location

How to set autosave

Autosaving is useful if you want to save all your chat logs. Settings are required in advance, so prepare before the meeting starts.

It’s easy to set up, just select “Meeting (basic)” from your Zoom profile settings and change the “Chat auto-save” toggle to blue.

Auto-saving saves the host from having to save the chat manually, which is useful if you often check the log.

How to save to the cloud and how to check messages

If you have a paid Zoom license, you can save your chat history in the cloud.

If you have a paid license, follow the steps below to operate Zoom and the chat log will remain in the cloud.

  1. Click the “Recording” tab in My Meeting Settings
  2. Change the “Cloud recording” toggle to blue
  3. Check “Save chat messages from meetings/webinars”

If you want to check the chat saved in the cloud, you can access it from the email you receive from Zoom or from My Page.

To view the chat log from email, simply click the URL in the email sent from Zoom when cloud recording is ready.

When checking from My Page, click “Cloud Recording” when the chat is saved and select a topic. Downloading a text file is convenient when sharing with someone.

Three reasons why logs (history) cannot be used

Three reasons why logs (history) cannot be used

Even if you change the Zoom settings using the method described above, there are cases where chats cannot be saved successfully.

Let’s check two possible causes in this chapter.

permission not granted

If you are not the Zoom meeting host, you may not have permission to save chats or download files.

In this case, it makes no sense to change your settings. If you want to check the chat log, ask the meeting organizer.

do not have a paid license

If you’re having trouble using cloud recording, check your license type. As mentioned above, Zoom’s cloud recording is only available with a paid license.

If you already have a paid license, let’s check if the account switching was successful.

If you don’t have a paid license, use local records or consider upgrading from a free license on this occasion.

If you save the chat exchanged during the Zoom meeting, you can check the content later. As for the saving method, there are local saving and cloud saving that can only be used with a paid license, so choose the one that is easier to use.

Zoom has a lot of useful functions in addition to the ability to save chats. In some cases, it can only be used with a paid license, so please consider this opportunity.
