*Zoom and services including the name Zoom are services provided by Zoom Video Communications, Inc.

From July 15, 2022, Zoom will have a 40-minute limit even for meetings with two participants if you have a free subscription. (Previously, it was only for meetings with 3 or more people.)
Companies and organizations using Zoom for business should consider switching to a paid license at this opportunity.

With the spread of remote work, there are probably more opportunities to hold web conferences and meetings using Zoom, and to participate in seminars and lectures.

This article explains basic operations such as registering a Zoom account and holding/participating in meetings for those who are new to Zoom.

We also introduce the functions and how to choose each plan of Zoom, so if you are worried about how to use Zoom, please refer to it.

Zoom account registration and application installation procedure

Zoom account registration and application installation procedure

First, I will explain how to register a Zoom account and download the desktop and mobile apps.

If you want to be able to use Zoom at home or on the go, it is a good idea to install the app on both your computer and your smartphone/tablet.

In addition, since the account is generally used in common, the registration work only needs to be done once, and there is no problem to operate from either device.

For PC (Windows/Mac)

When using Zoom on a computer, first register an account and then install the app.

You can also use it from a browser, but the app version is more operable, so if you don’t have problems such as lack of space, basically use the app version.

The procedure for registering a Zoom account and installing the application on a computer is as follows.

    1. Access the Zoom website ( https://zoom.us/ )
    2. Enter your email address and click “Sign up is free”
    3. Select your date of birth and click Continue
    4. Open the email you received and click “Activate Account”
    5. You will be asked if you want to register as a school representative, so select “Yes” or “No” and click “Continue”
    6. Set your name and password and click “Continue”
    7. Invite others or click Skip Step
    8. Click the Download button on the Zoom desktop client
    9. Run the downloaded file and follow the instructions to install

Once the installation is complete, launch the Zoom app and log in.

For smartphones/tablets (iOS/Android)

When using Zoom on a smartphone or tablet, first install the app and then register an account.

In the case of mobile devices, it is not possible to hold or participate in Zoom from a browser, so it is necessary to install the application.

The procedure for installing the Zoom app and registering an account on a smartphone or tablet is as follows.

  1. Search for Zoom on the App Store (Google Play for Android)
  2. Tap “Zoom Cloud Meetings”
  3. Tap “Get”
  4. When the installation is complete, launch the Zoom app and tap “Sign up” (If you have already registered an account on your computer, tap “Sign in” to log in)
  5. Set your birthday, email address, name and tap “Sign up”
  6. Open the email you received and tap “Active Account”
  7. Set a password and tap “Continue”
  8. Invite others or tap Skip Step
  9. Tap “Go to My Account”

Procedures for holding and participating in meetings

Procedures for holding and participating in meetings

Once you have registered and installed your Zoom account, let’s continue to check the basic operations of the Zoom app.

This section explains how to hold a meeting immediately or at a later date (schedule registration), and how to participate when you receive an invitation to a meeting.

Hold a meeting

With Zoom, there are two ways to launch a meeting that will be held immediately, and a way to schedule a meeting to be held at a later date.

Each operation procedure is as follows. (Here, we introduce the procedure for the PC version, but you can also hold the same flow on the mobile version.)

If you want to start the meeting immediately

  1. Launch the Zoom app and click “New Meeting”
  2. Click “Start meeting” (If you use My Personal Meeting ID, turn it on and click)
  3. Click “Participants” from the toolbar at the bottom of the screen
  4. Click “Invite”
  5. Notify the invitation URL by email or chat within Zoom

To schedule for a specific date and time

  1. Launch the Zoom app and click “Schedule”
  2. Set meeting dates,  webinar page. Here you will see a list of scheduled times, passwords, etc.
  3. Click “Save”
  4. Set members to invite and timing of notifications
  5. Click “Add”

You can edit the meeting schedule and participant information later.

Join a meeting

If you have received an invitation to a Zoom meeting, you can enter Zoom by clicking the join link provided in the email or chat.

For meetings, you may need to enter a password, and for webinars, you may need to enter your name and email address, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to participate.

Is Zoom free or can I use it without registering an account?

Is Zoom free or can I use it without registering an account

While there are many meeting tools that require account registration regardless of the organizer or participant, Zoom can be used without account registration if certain conditions are met.

From here, we will explain the conditions for using Zoom without registering an account and how to select a plan when registering an account.

Participants can use without registering an account

If you meet the following requirements, you can join the meeting without registering for a Zoom account.

  • Be a Zoom meeting participant
  • Join a meeting from the Zoom app

Only participants who are invited to enter the room can use Zoom without registering an account.

Account registration is required to host a meeting, so if you are likely to host a meeting in the future, it would be more efficient to complete account registration when installing the app.

Zoom itself can also be used from a browser (for a computer), but if you do not register an account, you will need to use it from the app.

For business use, we recommend subscribing to a paid plan.

Zoom has a free plan with basic features and a paid plan with more features added.

The main features available in the free plan are as follows.

Anyone can use the free plan by registering an account (account registration is optional if you only participate), so it is recommended for personal and private use.

However, the free plan has a time limit (up to 40 minutes at a time) even for meetings with two participants, and it does not support cloud recording. I have.

If you frequently make group calls of 40 minutes or more, or if you are using it in a company, we recommend you to subscribe to the Professional plan or higher account.

The types of Zoom paid plans and the list of functions added by each plan are as follows.

plan Features to be added Maximum number of participants in a meeting
Pro plan Unlimited group calls/Role assignment to each user/Advanced meeting functions such as recording/recording settings/encryption/Reporting on the number of meetings, date, number of participants, etc./Customization of personal meeting ID/Cloud up to 5GB Interoperability with Recording/Skype For Business etc. 100 people
Business plan Customize URL/Save data to private cloud/Add account from domain/Login using corporate credentials, etc. 300 people
Business plus plan Customize URL/Save data to private cloud/Add account from domain/Login using corporate credentials, etc. 300 people
corporate plan Unlimited cloud recordings/webinar bundles and more 500 people

The maximum number of participants varies depending on the plan, so be sure to choose a plan that is suitable for the size of your company.

The Professional plan is for individuals or small groups, the Business plan is for small businesses, and the Enterprise plan is for large companies.
